Step into Bangalore and you'll notice a strong British influence in the streets you walk. The famous shopping centre Brigade Road, leading to Infantry Road, Cavalry Road, and roads from MG Road (earlier known as South Parade Road), show military influence left from the Raj days. Some roads have been named after battles, like Assaye Road and Meanee Avenue Road (now shortened to “Avenue Road”). These battles were associated with Madras Sappers. The MEG is still a prominent landmark in Bangalore and headquartered close to Ulsoor lake.

You can also find areas in Bangalore with an English touch like Cleveland Town, Cooke Town, Cox Town, Langford Town, Fraser Town, Austin Town … all located in and around the “cantonment area” as it was called. One can find a few old buildings in parts of the city which bear a silent testimony to the fact that British played a major role in our country during the pre-independence period.

Almost all Bangaloreans speak English fluently with a lot of native jargon thrown in. This makes Bangalore a desirable place for foreigners to establish their businesses without worrying about language issues. English is spoken by all youngsters as readily as their mother tongue, and here one finds cultures across the country united by the common language—English.
